A’s pitchers hold Phils to three hits

The Phillies offense was as frigid as the Philadelphia weather on Sunday. With temps around 48-degrees with a brisk wind blowing, the Phillies dropped the finale of their three-game series with the Oakland A’s by a 4-1 count. If you guessed that Jean Segura would be the team leader in home runs at any point this season, you win. Segura hit his second of the season in the only highlight for Philadelphia.

OFFENSE: Nothing against any of the Phillies, but when Jean Segura accounts for the lone run and the only two hits in the game came from bench players, you know it was a tough day in Philadelphia. Segura’s second home run in as many days came in the bottom of the ninth. With J.T. Realmuto not starting, Segura moved up to the number-two hole in the order and went 1-for-4… The only other hits came from third baseman Johan CamargoBryson Stott played short instead of Didi Gregorius – and Garrett Stubbs, who started in place of Realmuto… The combination of Kyle Schwarber, Nick Castellanos, Bryce Harper and Rhys Hoskins went 0-for-15 with five strikeouts in the game… Matt Vierling also went 0-for-2 and is still hitless in eight at-bats.

HR: Oak – McKinney (1); PHIL – Segura (2)

PITCHING: Starter Zach Eflin pitched pretty well but his pitch count got up to the high 60s and Joe Girardi yanked him after four shutout innings because he did not get the amount of work in during spring training that Aaron Nola and Kyle Gibson did this spring… Bailey Falter relieved Eflin and got hit around, giving up two earned runs in 2 1/3 innings of work, including a home run to Billy McKinney. Damon Jones, another young reliever on the staff, also allowed two earned runs in two innings of work.

WP – Jefferies (1-0), LP – Falter (0-1), SV – none

PHILLIES NOTES: Normally for weekend day games the Phillies wear their cream colored uniforms, a fan favorite. On Saturday and Sunday they were in their traditional red pinstripes. Well, the cream uniforms and the throwback Thursday afternoon powder blue uniforms have yet to arrive from Fanatics (located in nearby Easton, PA). There is no timetable for when they will arrive, but the Phillies next weekend afternoon game is April 23rd against Milwaukee and their first Thursday afternoon game is April 28th against the Rockies.

ON THE AGENDA: The Mets (3-1) roll into town Monday for two night games and then a day game on Wednesday. Ranger Suarez starts Monday and will be followed by Zack Wheeler and Aaron Nola. New York has Taijuan Walker, Tylor Megill and Max Scherzer lined up to pitch in the series. Kyle Gibson starts the series opener in Miami on Thursday night. The Phillies are 0.5 games back of New York in the NL East.
