Three more longballs in Phillies win over A’s

The Phillies continued their assault on major league pitching Saturday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park with three more home runs against the A’s and came away with a 4-2 win. In addition to the home runs, Kyle Gibson was right on point, giving up just two hits and no walks in seven innings and striking out 10 batters, just one shy of his career mark.

OFFENSE: Kyle Schwarber hit his first HR as a Phillie on Friday and Nick Castellanos hit his first on Saturday in the first inning with a runner on to give the Phillies a 2-0 early lead… Later in the game, Rhys Hoskins and Jean Segura hit back-to-back solo home runs to make it 4-0. Hoskins also doubled and walked and Segura singled in the game… Alec Bohm got the start at third base with a left-hander on the mound and singled and doubled in the game… Tough game for J.T. Realmuto who went 0-for-4 with a throwing error and a passed ball.

HR: OAK – none; PHIL – Castellanos (1), Hoskins (1), Segura (1)

PITCHING: Kyle Gibson was excellent, there’s no other way to say it. He is one of just three pitchers to throw seven innings in a game in the early going, with Robbie Ray and Sean Manaea. Gibson threw 82 pitches with 57 strikes… Jose Alvarado, who made just one appearance in spring training, gave up one run in his one inning of work… Corey Knebel picked up his first save as a Phillie and was the victim of Realmuto’s throwing error that resulted in an unearned run.

WP: Gibson (1-0), LP: Irvin (0-1), SV: Knebel (1)

PHILLIES NOTES: Prior to the game, Bryce Harper received his trophy as the National League MVP… Former Phillies pitcher Cole Irvin was hit for four earned runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings… Former Phillies OF Andrew McCutchen was hit by a pitch in a game at Wrigley Field, leading to the benches to clear.

ON THE AGENDA: The series ends Sunday with Zach Eflin starting for the Phillies and RHP Daulton Jefferies going for Oakland.
