Kyle Gibson

Gibson sharp in spring debut

Kyle Gibson is coming into his first full season with the Phillies and looking to improve on the showing that he had with the team in the second half of last season. Gibson was two different pitchers between his time with Texas and his time with Philadelphia, posting a 6-3, 2.97 mark with the Rangers and a 4-6, 5.09 line with the Phillies. Overall, his ERA finished at 3.71 with 30 starts and 182 innings of work.

PITCHING: Gibson started and threw the first two innings and allowed two hits while striking out three batters. He did also hit one batter with a pitch in the first inning… All five of Atlanta’s runs came in the bottom of the eighth against James Marvel (0-1), who came over from the Pirates organization and is ticketed for Lehigh Valley… Sam Coonrod threw a perfect inning in relief of Gibson and Jakob Hernandez came on to get the final two outs in the eighth, striking out the two batters he faced.

WP: A. Winans (1-0), LP: J. Marvel (0-1), SV: none

OFFENSE: Johan Rojas finished the day 1-for-3, but perhaps his best hit ball came to leadoff the game. Rojas lifted a long flyball to left field but the brisk wind that was blowing in kept it in the park. Even with the wind it was caught just on the edge of the warning track for a long out… Bryson Stott, Darrick Hall and Simon Muzziotti all picked up a hit in the game… The Phillies struck out nine times in the game and did not draw a walk.

PHILLIES – HR: none; RISP: 1-for-6; LOB: 3; SB: Muzziotti (1), Rojas (1), CS: none

DEFENSE: The Phillies opened the spring with two errorless games, but that streak ended Sunday. Mickey Moniak misplayed a fly ball in left field for an error and Drew Maggi, a non-roster player in camp with the Phillies also misplayed a ball in left… The Phillies turned two double-plays in the game, one started by third baseman Alec Bohm and the other by shortstop Bryson Stott… Darrick Hall made a nice play on a groundball that took a bad bounce and fielded it cleanly to get the out.

PHILLIES – OUTFIELD ASSISTS: Moniak, LF (1) at third base.

PHILLIES NOTES: It was announced during the game that the Kyle Schwarber signing is now official. He met some of the players Sunday morning in Clearwater. It will likely be at least a couple of days until he makes his spring debut… Zack Wheeler met with the media and while his debut is still unclear, he believes he can be ready to pitch on opening day. Wheeler dealt with shoulder soreness over the winter and was further delayed getting to camp with a case of the flu… Popular Phillie Ronald Torreyes rejoined the team on a minor league contract Sunday. He will likely battle with Johan Camargo for a spot as a reserve infielder with the team.

ON THE AGENDA: The Phillies travel to nearby St. Petersburg on Monday to play the Yankees at 1:05 pm. RHP Hans Crouse starts for the Phillies and RHP Jameson Taillon goes for the New Yorkers. The only broadcast is on Phillies.com.
